BASF hikes prices again

By David Reed, UT EditorWyandotte, Michigan-BASF Corp. has again implemented a price increase for its urethane chemicals, based on a continuing rise in the cost of benzene, a key raw material for its products.With effect from 1 Oct. BASF will increase the price of its MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) materials by $0.12 per pound (Euro 0.30/kg), while its TDI (toluene diisocyanate material prices will see an increase of $0.10/pound and its polyether polyols will go up $0.06/pound, a 27 Aug. statement said.”Very strong demand coupled with limited capacity, supply disruptions, plant turnarounds and outages within the industry require BASF to take this action,” said Larry Burkowski, director of the firm’s urethanes chemicals business in North America.”In addition, key raw materials such as benzene, toluene and propylene continue to reach unprecedented price levels, putting tremendous pressure on margins.” As a result, “BASF’s surcharge on MDI due tobenzene prices will remain in effect in September at $0.12/pound,” his statement added.”
