Beijing — The China Polyurethane Industry Association (CPUIA) predicts a 10% surplus in China’s MDI supply by 2018 in its proposal for the 13th Five-Year Plan for China’s PU sector, according to a copy seen by UTECH-polyurethane.com.
Last year China had 2,540kT/year total MDI capacity, all of which are located in eastern China, including 1,800kT /year facilities of Wanhua in Yantai, Shandong and Ningbo, Zhejiang, 500kT/year facilities of Bayer (Shanghai) Polyurethanes and 240kT/year facilities of Shanghai Lianheng Isocyanate, according to the proposal.
In 2014, the country produced 2,300kT MDI – the same as its total consumption including 1,500kT polymeric MDI and 800kT pure MDI. The polymeric MDI is used mostly in rigid foam insulation materials, microporous integral skin foams, auto bumpers, auto interiors and composite wood; the pure MDI in pastes, sole solutions and elastane.
China issued the sector’s admission standards in 2009 stipulating that all new facilities must have capacity over 300kT/year. The CPUIA has set an MDI capacity goal of 4,400kT/year by 2020.
It also calls for non-phosgene production methods for environmental, safety and energy reasons, and urges the development of diversified, upscale products used in the TPU, elastane, automotive and high-speed railway markets.
