By Patrick Raleigh, ERJ On-line news editorMiddlebury, Connecticut- Higher unit volumes and favourable currency trends helped Crompton Corp. to post an 11-percent rise in first quarter sales of its Adiprene/Vibrathane urethane prepolymers.The Middlebury-based group did not issue details of earnings for the castable prepolymers unit, which is positioned alongside its EPDM rubber business within a Polymers reporting segment. Overall, the Polymers segment recorded a 19-percent year-on-year sales rise to $81.2 million, while operating profit rose 10 percent to $10.2 million. The higher earnings reflected increased unit volumes and cost saving initiatives offset higher raw material and energy costs, Crompton said 27 April.Elsewhere, Crompton reported a 6-percent rise in sales of urethane additives-polyols and dispersions-mainly due to favourable currency factors. “
