Hefei, Anhui – Whirlpool (China) plans to open a new plant with 4m unit/year capacity for high-end energy-efficient refrigerators in Hefei, Anhui in mid 2016. Construction started in May 2014 with RMB600m ($97m) investment earmarked.
“The progress is going fine, and we have no plan to bring it ahead of schedule due to a depressed domestic market,” said Whirlpool (China)’s board secretary Fang Bin.
The company, previously known as Hefei Rongshida Sanyo Electric, was renamed in December 2014 after Whirlpool’s acquisition. It currently has 3m unit/year refrigerator capacity.
Last year Whirlpool (China) was the fastest-growing company among China’s listed refrigerator makers, with a 32% rise in refrigerator revenue to RMB1bn, compared to a 222% increase in 2013.
“It’s not really something to be proud of as we are rising from a rather low base,” said Fang. “A more important task would be to increase our market share.” Last year the company’s refrigerator sales volume accounted for 1% of the China market.
