Chelmsford, Massachusetts – FRX Polymers has launched a range of non-halogenated flame retardants under the brand name Nofia.
They are designed for use in high-temperature polyurethane flexible foams in the transportation and electronics industries.
Nofia FRs are non-halogenated polyphosphonates that can be added in either powder form or as a liquid polyol solution. They act as flame retardants and heat stabilisers, enabling PU flexible foams to meet the UL 94 V-0 fire standard. The company claims the foams also maintain mechanical performance after thermal ageing tests at 150°C.
Applications include automotive under-the-hood parts, cushions and gaskets for electric vehicle battery packs, and foams designed to reduce noise, vibration and harshness in a variety of transportation parts. They can also be used in gaskets for electrical and electronics components with UL 94 V-0 requirements.
During the development process. FRX worked with customers looking to replace expandable graphite used in a one-shot PU foam process for automotive engine covers.
‘Our unique non-halogenated flame retardants have been proven to provide critical benefits beyond flame retardance across a range of applications,’ said Ina Jiang, vice-president for sales & marketing at FRX Polymers. ‘This new use is another example where Nofia polyphosphonates enable groundbreaking performance.’
