Yantai, Shandong – Wanhua has announced plans to build a 400 kT/year MDI plant somewhere in the US Gulf Coast.
Details of the location and technology are sketchy, but Jacob Sturgeon, general manager Wanhua Chemical (America) said the announcement “fits in with our policy of being a worldwide leader.” He added 400kT is not the largest capacity nowadays, but it certainly is world-scale.”
Sturgeon added that a 2020 start-up is a reasonable earliest time frame, given the need for permitting and construction.
“It is in line with our historic performance of building efficient MDI facilities in China and the purchase of BorsodChem, a US footprint was missing,” said Sturgeon.
He added: “North America is continues to be strong and notwithstanding some headwinds we see MDI continuing to grow because of energy and indoor air-quality standards and replacement of phenol-formaldehyde.”
